A Retrofuturist Vision for Urban Resilience - Salvation Town is a speculative urban design project that reimagines the historic settlement of Kayaköy as a resilient refuge for the future. Inspired by retrofuturism, the project brings together the architectural wisdom of the past and contemporary technologies to explore how historic settlements can adapt to climate change, natural disasters, and future living needs. - 4th year design studio

Challenge

The project addresses a future scenario in which sea-level rise and earthquakes threaten coastal settlements in Fethiye, creating a need for safer living environments. The challenge was to accommodate displaced communities in Kayaköy while preserving its historical identity, responding to environmental risks, and revitalizing its largely abandoned urban fabric.

Goal

To transform Kayaköy into a self-sufficient, disaster-resilient settlement that balances heritage preservation with future-oriented urban development. The vision aims to create a safe and sustainable living environment while restoring the area's historical, agricultural, and social functions.

Solution

Guided by the concept of retrofuturism, the masterplan combines traditional settlement principles with sustainable technologies and a network of specialized urban hubs. Historic buildings are revitalized alongside new residential areas, incorporating solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and climate-responsive design.

Agricultural and production hubs support local self-sufficiency, while water management systems, forest conservation areas, and wildfire monitoring facilities strengthen environmental resilience. Together, these interventions reimagine Kayaköy as a connected, productive, and adaptable settlement where the past helps shape the future.
